This is a very good camcorder! You really can’t go wrong with this one. Its very easy to use and no setup is required. The batteries last forever (well maybe not forever) and you can get alot done with out having to recharge. It has a wonderful steady shot feature which removes some of the shaking your hands make when you are shooting. It also has other great features. It has a 20x optical zoom (the lens actually moving) and a 360x digital zoom (the camera enlarging the picture), It is Control-L (LANC)compatible (which is similar to Panasonics 5-pin control system), so you can edit directly from the camcorder (if you plan on using a computer to edit), an LCD is attached to the side (you know, the screen that pops out), but it also has one of Sony’s best features, the 0 LUX Nightshot. This enables you to film in TOTAL darkness. Its a wonderful feature. This camera is alot of fun, its light weight, and has rather good quality (but is nothing compared to MiniDV or Digital8). If you want a good 8mm camera, and don’t want to sell the farm, this is it. If you want really good quality and want to edit on your new iMac, get a MiniDV camera or a Digital8. Keep in mind, you can still edit on a computer using a video capture card (a new one is comming out soon from 3dfx www.3dfx.com). So this is a purchase you shall benefit from. I STRONGLY suggest this purchase.

i ordered this set up for my wife for her birthday. its a great price but just keep in mind the old adage ” you get what you pay for”. the accessories arent the best you can get by any means. but…just keep in mind that if you want the camera, a memory card, a carrying case, and a hdmi cable, youll spend over 239.00 if you buy them individually. you get that plus a lot more with this package. the camera cleaning kit feels cheap but its all you really need and the carrying case is for the cyber shot camera. i wont know if it fits til next week when my wife opens it for her birthday. ill definitely be using the hdmi cable and the screen protectors which can be expensive on their own. bottom line…if you dont need all the accessories right away or have the money for top of the line ones just get the camera. however…this is a decent starter package for the price. besides…an extra battery never hurts anyone. even if it is aftermarket.

Good things about this camcorder:
1. The 25X zoom
2. HUGE LCD screen
3. Great video and sound quality
4. Solid build
5. Easy connection to computer with iLink–especially with a Sony VAIO computer
6. Enough special effects and super nightshot.

The bad things:
1. It is very heavy and big
2. The build-in printer: I stop using this feature completely since the still image quality is quite low so the pictures came out not pretty at all and it takes more than 2 minutes to print one photo. The 830 does the right thing to have the printer externally.
3. Slow rewind speed

I have no trouble finding the Digital-8 tapes and got quite a lot of photo papers for it (even though I don’t use them at all).

The DCR-TRV820 is Sony’s top of the line Digital8 camcorder. Sony Digital8 records a digital signal onto standard 8mm or Hi8 tapes. It is possible to record up to 500 lines of resolution on a Digital8 tape. This camcorder allows you to digitally transfer your video to a computer using the FireWire standard, just like MiniDV. It is an excellent camera, probably the BEST on market for the price you pay, excellent video quality, and good pictures too.
But need to improve 3 points:

1- You Cannot wath it on a PAL System TV, Thats important to me because have to travel a lot to Europe, but cannot show what i have recorded to my family there. All my olds cameras have that option.

2- The Microfone is not as good as the cameras with the Mic on Front. This camera havi it on top, ¿why? i don’t know

3- Most of the funtions are on the touch panel, i want the white balance out, and maybe some others funtions.

…The unit is easy to use and the instructions are simply presented and very clear cut. My wife uses it without complaint and is always happy with her results.

On the other hand, the unit does have some nice�though limited– advanced features such as preset exposures, special effects, and Sony’s unique NightShot feature. My daughter especially likes the special effects package. I particularly appreciate the Night Shot feature. I video a lot of youth sporting events that can involve a lot of transitional lighting issues, especially on those evenings around the time change seasons, an this unit handles all those issues very well. It does a commendable job in moonlight as well.

The unit is well designed and rugged. It is not a choice for die-hard vidoephiles�the range of advanced features is too limited, but they should be adequate for normal family outing type use.

Battery life using the LCD is rather short. The viewfinder picture is black & white. Using it rather than the LCD expands battery life significantly but the quality of he picture in the viewfinder is not good.

The audio quality is average. Functionality of interface with other devices (TV, PC, etc.) is good.

On the whole, a great unit to start out with or for more adventurous outings where camera safety might be an issue. (I took this one white water rafting�not my state-of-the-art unit.). It has enough features to give a feel for an advanced unit without overwhelming the user, provides better than average output and cost wise is a relative bargain.

Sony CCDTRV16 Hi8 Handycam Camcorder Specifications

The Sony TRV16 Handycam offers a great range of high-end camcorder features in an affordable package. It combines easy operation with a wide variety of advanced features, such as preset exposures, special effects, and Sony’s unique NightShot feature. Sony’s elongated Handycam design fits easily in one hand and is well-balanced. While not the lightest of camcorders, we found the Handycam line to be one of the most ergonomic and easy to use.

The Sony TRV16 Handycam has a nifty status screen on the outside of the LCD screen module that lets you know how many minutes you’ve recorded or how far you’ve played a tape. It also tells you if there’s a tape in the camcorder. The LCD screen swivels 210 degrees, which lets you record above your head, or put yourself in the picture. The optical viewfinder is black and white, which is not a real drawback since we ended up using the LCD screen for most of our shooting.

The Sony TRV16 Handycam lets you manually adjust focus and exposure; it also includes six programmed exposure modes, plus backlight compensation, to help optimize your video under different shooting conditions. It features a 180x digital zoom, great for getting closeups and recording faraway events.

We enjoyed Sony’s full range of special effects, including the distinctive pastel, slim, and stretch picture modes. The TRV416 also provides widescreen, black-and-white, sepia, negative, and solarized modes. We liked the range of fade options, which included fade to black, mosaic, monotone, and a bounce-image effect.

The camcorder includes Sony’s exclusive NightShot capability, which lets you shoot video in total darkness. The TRV16 emits an invisible infrared beam to light the scene. The resulting video is basically black and white, and usually lower quality than normal video, but being able to get decent images in complete darkness is nonetheless pretty amazing.

This camcorder uses the 8mm format, which means you can’t play the tapes in your VCR; you have to connect the camcorder to your TV for playback.

We have owned several different camcorders over the years, but this is by far the best to date. Ease of use makes it fun to use. Sony seems to have listened to complaints over the years because this camcorder is quite intuitive to use. The menu driven system is quick and straight forward. Setup was a matter of minutes and we were filming. First we practiced around the house to make sure we understood how everything worked and then we mounted it in an underwater housing and took it underwater.. The footage is great with battery life to spare. Usually battery life is a problem with most camcorders in housings, but not this one. We have used the included memory sticks and found that they are great for getting video and pictures transferred quickly to the computer. The filters are also great for fixing lighting problems. The tripod has aldo been very handy for shooting ourselves in those special places in the world. It has been a very good deal for us.

This is compact enough to carry around and at the same time big enough to get a good grip.
The 60 GB HDD is enough as I download the videos often.
The clarity is amazing in outdoors as well as indoors and even at night.
The only thing I do not like is, the LCD must be used all the times!
Touch screen works well….even my 4 yr old can operate this on his own
